Sequins, Soca and Sweat at UEL Stratford campus – carnival film and exhibition 13 Oct

Thursday 5 October 2006

Lyn Brown MP will be among guests of honour at ‘Sequins, Soca and Sweat: the Hidden Heart of Carnival’, a film show and exhibition held on Friday 13 October at the University of East London to mark Black History Month.

Sequins, Soca and Sweat is a critically acclaimed documentary that uncovers the hidden heart, passion and creativity of Notting Hill Carnival by award-winning filmmaker, Stephen Rudder. The film screening is followed by a Q&A with the director, staff and students from UEL’s School of Education, and students from Newham schools and colleges.

The event also includes a Carnival arts exhibition with original Notting Hill carnival costume-makers Trinbago and Inspirational Arts, modelled by young people from the East Thames Group Foyer Project.

Sequins, Soca and Sweat has attracted rave reviews since it was released earlier this year. Gaylene Gould, BBC4 Film Critic, said: "This film presents a compassionate look into one of Britain’s most dramatic artforms and histories. It’ll make you want to jump-up and become involved all at once."

The event is in Lecture Theatre TL300 on UEL Stratford campus, with entrances on Water Lane and Cedars Road. The exhibition is open to the public from 1 pm. Admission is free but places are limited. To register call 020 8223 2222 or email e.cale@uel.ac.uk

Ends/.
