All welcome to Open House at UEL Docklands campus

Thursday 7 September 2006

The University of East London (UEL) Docklands campus will open its doors to all-comers on Saturday 16 September as part of Open House’s annual celebration of London architecture.

Between 10am and 1pm, local residents and architecture enthusiasts are invited to join guided tours of the campus - recently expanded after the completion of UEL’s £110 million investment programme.

A special alumni tour will take place at 1pm. Graduates of UEL and its earlier incarnations can catch up on all the latest developments, including the impressive new Business School and Knowledge Dock Centre, complete with 400-seat lecture theatre, high-tech computing hall and state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities.

The UEL Docklands campus, located on the waterfront of the Royal Albert Dock, is London's first new university campus to be built in over half a century. Opened by the Mayor of London on his very first day in office in 2000, the campus won acclaim for its iconic architecture and was short-listed for Building of the Year.

Today, it serves over 5,000 students and researchers, and is set for further expansion with a new 800-unit student village due for completion in April 2007.

The campus is one of over six hundred London buildings that will be opened to the public on the weekend of 16-17 September as part of Open House’s celebration of the capital’s magnificent architecture.
