This September, the University of East London (UEL) is launching a new enterprise and business skills programme aimed at enabling aspiring entrepreneurs to start up their own business.
‘Be your own boss’ is run by Knowledge Dock - UEL’s Enterprise Development and Support Service. Through afternoon and evening training sessions, participants will learn how to successfully plan for the financial, technical and emotional demands of self-employment.
The twelve-week programme covers the key areas of business planning, marketing, employment law and business contracts, as well as the broader aspects of starting a new business, such as managing personal finances and maintaining relationships. Participants can select study options most relevant to the needs of their particular business plans.
Thorsten Klein, Manager of Hothatch, UEL’s innovative business support facility, said: “’Be your own boss’ builds on the insights we’ve gained from working with Hothatch clients to offer a holistic overview of the process of starting a new business.
Entrepreneurs often fail to prepare for the various knock-on effects of self-employment; this exciting new programme offers a comprehensive foundation on which they can support their ambitions and business ideas.
“It is also one of the few courses specifically tailored towards people who are currently employed but seeking to start-up their own business. We aim to allow people who have always dreamed of becoming their own boss to explore business concepts in a supportive and well-informed environment.”
‘Be your own boss’ is run by UEL in collaboration with Canterbury Christchurch, Anglia Ruskin and Kingston universities. Joint-networking events will be held to bring together the experiences and resources of all the universities and entrepreneurs involved.
Upon completion of the programme, participants will be awarded a UEL Certificate of Entrepreneurship and a fully functional business plan to follow through on their experiences.
