Tuesday 19 September 2006

The University of East London (UEL) is launching a new series of public lectures with an exciting range of subjects and authoritative and engaging speakers.

The programme is launched in style on Tuesday 10 October with a lecture by Professor Gavin Poynter, Head of the UEL School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, entitled From Beijing to the Bow Road: Olympic Cities, States and Societies in the Twenty First Century”.

Prof Poynter is a leading authority on social and economic regeneration and the author of a comparative study of the Olympics impact on previous host cities. His talk will explore ideas to be developed in his forthcoming book on the subject.   Prof Poynter said: “The success of London’s bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has had a tremendous impact on our region, and puts East London in the spotlight as never before.

“The challenge now is to learn from the experiences of other host cities so that we can best co-ordinate efforts locally and nationally to ensure the Games are a fantastic success and contribute positively to the social, cultural and economic regeneration of our communities.”   The UEL Public Lecture series continues with forthcoming talks on child psychology by Dr Derek Moore; ‘Bridging the Digital Divide’ by Professor Lizbeth Goodman, Director of SMARTlab, and ‘Why health promotion can seriously damage your health’ by Dr Geoff Webb.
