From ASBOs to obesity, random stabbings to terrorist plots, so much of the news these days paints a downright depressing picture of youth and communities around the UK.
For anyone interested in going beyond bleak headlines, the University of East London’s (UEL) new BA (hons) degree in Youth and Community Work offers the opportunity to make a positive difference to society while developing a professional grounding in a stimulating and rewarding field.
The innovative programme, set to be launched this September, addresses up-to-the-minute developments and explores the complex relationship between theory and practice in the field.
Students gain first-hand experience of youth and community work while addressing the key issues of diversity, empowerment and rights.
Paul Adams, Programme Leader for Youth and Community Work at UEL, said: “Everyone deserves the chance to have a voice, influence and place in their community and society. As youth and community workers, we aim to encourage mutual cooperation and support the personal and social development of young people.
“Our students develop critical skills and valuable work experience in youth and community settings. They also learn transferable practical skills in researching, writing, presenting and organising ideas, and will go on to positions in local authorities, voluntary organisations and government departments.”
A limited number of places are still available on Youth and Community Work to start this September or in February 2007. For further information, visit www.uel.ac.uk/clearing or contact Paul Adams on 020 8223 2381 or p.adams@uel.ac.uk.
