UEL combats cyber-crime with new degree in Information Security Systems

Monday 21 August 2006

A new degree at the University of East London (UEL) is set to help combat the rise of cyber-crime and tackle the growing threat of the high-tech hackers and fraudsters who steal billions of pounds a year.

Launched this month, the BSc (Hons) Information Security Systems will provide students the specialist IT skills needed to succeed in the expanding field of information security and computer forensics.

Computer crime or ‘Cyber-crime’ is the world’s fastest-growing criminal activity, costing an estimated $220 billion to companies and individuals annually, and there is a growing demand for trained IT security specialists.

Dr Hamid Jahankhani, Principal Lecturer at UEL’s School of Computing and Technology, said: “Computer security is at the forefront of the knowledge explosion, and this new BSc provides students with a balance of theory, practical skills and valuable experience, including the opportunity to undertake a one-year paid work placement.

“I would definitely recommend the programme to anyone who enjoys the challenge of solving complicated technical problems and wants to develop their career in a well-rewarded and fast-developing sector.”

UEL’s innovative School of Computing and Technology brings together computing, business information systems, energy studies, pipeline technology, product design, geographical information systems, land surveying, and civil, electrical and manufacturing engineering. The School has dedicated facilities for both engineering and computing, housed in new, purpose-built laboratories at UEL’s Docklands Campus.

There are still a limited number of places available for this September. Contact Dr Jahankhani on 020 8223 2071 or 020 8223 3333 or log on to www.uel.ac.uk/
