UEL teams up with Chicago university to launch International degree in Theatre Studies

Monday 17 July 2006

The University of East London (UEL) has teamed up with Columbia College in Chicago to launch a new Theatre Studies international degree programme, which focuses on contemporary world theatre and offers students the opportunity to spend a semester studying in the USA.

BA (Hons) Theatre Studies (International) is a multidisciplinary programme aimed at students interested in working in theatre as writers, performers, directors, technicians, or critics. A second year exchange programme has been set up with Columbia College to help students gain first-hand experience of theatre practices outside the UK.

For those not tempted to make the trip, UEL also offers a new BA (Hons) Theatre Studies degree, which matches the international version in every way except for the exchange. Students will study world theatre, acting process, arts administration, and design and production, among other options.

The new Theatre Studies programmes are being introduced as part of the development of UEL’s recently established Institute of Performing Arts Development (IPAD). With UEL a partner in the Stratford Circus arts centre, Theatre Studies students will enjoy regular access to a professional theatre and a variety of rehearsal and performing spaces in which to both study and perform their craft.

Mark O’Thomas, Director of the new Institute, said: “East London has a long and proud history in developing innovative theatre, as well as a tremendous multicultural vibrancy, which we aim to reflect in our new Theatre Studies degrees.

“The new programmes are much wider in scope than traditional Drama degrees, and the development of IPAD and our partnerships with Stratford Circus and Columbia College will provide wonderful opportunities for our students.”
