Emerging artists put on a show to Re-member at Ada Street Gallery

Wednesday 5 July 2006

A group of University of East London (UEL) Fine Art students invite local residents to pay a visit to their upcoming group show at the Ada Street Gallery in Hackney, opening on 22 July, 6.30 pm.

The new exhibition is entitled Re-member, a response to the old Chinese proverb: "I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand."

Artists involved in the exhibition include Georgina Beresford, whose work focuses on ideas of innocence lost and found; Wendy Caldon, who aims to show how everyday surfaces, like floors and walls, can be brought to life by the use of such materials as graphite or gilding, and Katie Gilman, who creates architectural and formal structures, working with everyday materials to explore personal issues of trauma and memory.

Rebecca Hope uses installation and film. She seeks to address the fragility of life, showing how our existence can become defined by forces outside our control. In her current work, she remembers those who live and die behind closed doors; Richard Johnston was born and raised in Kenya, and East African culture is a clear influence on his vibrant and colourful work.

Tabitha Knight’s works derive from small, subconscious doodles to offer unrestricted realisations of hidden meanings and buried patterns; Elizabeth Smith’s work uses mono-printing to explore the timeless human desire to make marks to define our territory.

Elisa Tosoni creates mazes out of stacked cardboard boxes to challenge viewers’ expectations and invite subtle feelings of claustrophobia, displacement and curiosity; Claire Wheeler‘s sculptures are inspired by motion and the perfect nature of circles, which suggest an endless cycle of renewal and rebirth; and Hannah Wilson uses sculpture and other mediums to capture the precious beauty and tranquillity of water.

This group of current and ex students reflects the variety of the student population at UEL, with mature, part-time and international artists. UEL encourages Fine Art students to get together and organise and curate exhibitions outside its spaces. This helps towards defining their art practice, as much as creating a network for their future career.

Re-member will be on show at the Ada Street Gallery 12-5pm daily from Sunday 23 to Saturday 29 July, and between 5 and 9 pm on Thursday 27 July. For further details, contact Elisa Tosoni on 07910 585948 or elisatosoni@hotmail.co.uk
