“Be not afraid of greatness” was the message given to local businesswomen at a Midsummer’s day training workshop run by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the University of East London (UEL) Docklands campus on Thursday 22 June.
The Personal Effectiveness workshop was organised as part of UEL’s successful EMPOWER project - run by members of the university's Business School to provide outreach and business advice services to women from ethnic minority communities.
Eleven women attended the event, in which Mary Johnson of the Royal Shakespeare Company led interactive role-pay activities focusing on self-esteem, personal impact, body language and presentation skills. The budding entrepreneurs then had the chance to discuss their business ideas with Hipolina Joseph and Barbra Wallace of UEL Business School.
Rugina Morran, Co-ordinator of the EMPOWER project, said: “It’s been an excellent day; everyone found it very useful in terms of self-development and building self-esteem, and we’ve all had a lot of fun too - it’s not every day you get to rehearse a Shakespeare play in the company of a professional actor."
