Hundreds enjoy Hackney Community Education and Training Fair

Thursday 18 May 2006

On Thursday 11 May, over five hundred Hackney residents gathered at Morley Hall, Hackney Community College, for a day of inspiration, information and guidance on training, educational opportunities and community services in and around the borough.

The Community Education and Training Fair was organised by a partnership of Aimhigher London East Thames Gateway, co-ordinated by London Metropolitan University and the University of East London (UEL).

May Kunle ‘Dare, Deputy Chief Executive of Hackney Community College, and Hakan Camuz, Managing Director of UMD Shipping Services, were among the speakers.

Mr Camuz came to London in 1991 not being able to speak a word of English. He enrolled onto an English language course while setting up he’s own business and then did another course in computer studies before enrolling as a mature student to complete a BA (Hons) degree in International Relations followed by an MA.

He said: “Completing my degree was the most enjoyable experience and challenge. I believe you can succeed in almost anything - if you enjoy what you are doing you will naturally work hard at it”.

The packed programme also included workshops, an exhibition, fashion show by Weaver’s Community Trust Girls Group with Asian garments donated by Bangla Plaza and Jeenuk, musical entertainment, Indian head massages, a prize draw and a free halal and vegetarian lunch.

The workshops on how to write a good CV, journeys through further and higher education, Indian head and neck massage and careers in health care proved particularly popular.

Jasbir Panesar, Community Development Co-ordinator at the University of East London, who has successfully organised a series of successful Education and Training Fairs in recent years, said: "It has been an enjoyable and exciting day and it has been wonderful to meet people from incredibly diverse backgrounds.

“Access to educational and employment opportunities are vital to enable people of all ages to achieve their full potential, and events like this can really open doors.”

Ends/.
