Civil Engineering students at the University of East London (UEL) are to benefit from an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) approved Graduate Training Scheme run by local authorities in partnership with leading engineering contractors and consultants.
On Wednesday 3 May, 39 students from UEL’s BEng (Hons) degree and MSc programmes in Civil Engineering attended a presentation at UEL’s Longbridge Road campus to find out more about work placement opportunities and graduate training schemes. ICE representatives were also on hand to offer advice to the students about their future professional development.
Alton Metzger, External Liaison and Placement Co-ordinator at UEL’s School of Computing and Technology, said: “As well as a great academic education, it’s also very important for our students to build practical work experience and gain good awareness of the various options and opportunities available to them through different employers.
"Recent government statistics have show that 94% of UEL students find work or postgraduate study within six months of finishing their degrees, but we’re constantly working to push that figure as close as we can to 100%. We’re also looking to bring more leading businesses onto our industrial liaison board, enabling us to ensure that our programmes continue to develop in line with the changing demands of employers, and it's great to be working so closely with Islington Council, which was awarded Transport Borough of the Year 2006 in the London Transport Awards.”
Linda Wan, Service Development Manager for Islington Council, talked to the students about the Council’s 3 year fast track training scheme and offered final year students the opportunity to apply for this year’s programme. Linda said: “At Islington Council, we’re committed to supporting and giving back to our community and our industry, and we’re currently looking for students who have the drive, ambition, right attitude and social conscience to succeed in the engineering industry. Today’s been an extremely successful day; we’ve had a great response from the students and we definitely hope to work more with the University of East London in the future.”
