The University of East London (UEL) is set to increase the already exciting diversity of its Stratford and Docklands campuses after unveiling a new range of competitive scholarships for international students.
From this month, undergraduate students from countries outside the EU are now eligible to apply for scholarships of £1,000, while students on taught postgraduate programmes could receive up to £2,000.
The new scholarship programme reflects the increasing internationalism of UEL, which is now a truly global learning community with over 4000 international students – around a fifth of UEL’s total student population.
Professor Michael Thorne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London said: “We are now a global community, uniquely diverse and cosmopolitan, bringing together students and researchers from more than 110 countries worldwide.
“We are proud of our uniquely diverse and multicultural learning community, our excellent facilities, and our growing national and international reputation for teaching and research. This new international scholarship programme will enable us to attract some of the best students from around the world.”
Oxana Galayda (23) is one of the thousands of international students attracted to East London by the offer of a UEL place. Oxana, who now lives in Stratford, came to London from Moscow in 2004 to begin an MBA programme. She quickly joined Junior Chamber London and, after winning a major prize at last December’s Junior Chamber International awards, said: “Studying at UEL has been a very interesting and engaging experience, as well as a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world. I’m now looking forward to becoming International Director of the London Chamber, helping to organise our members and attending national and international events.”
Vikram Trehan (18), originally from India but also now living in Stratford, began a BA (Hons) degree in Accounting and Finance in September 2005. Vikram said: “I really like UEL because the staff are very friendly and the campus is beautiful. This is my first time outside of India, but I already feel comfortable and the activities laid on by UEL for international students have really helped me to settle in.”
