A carnival of arts and culture comes to Royal Docks on Thursday 4 May, as the University of East London (UEL) opens its doors to showcase a wealth of theatrical, literary and musical talent from the Docklands area and around the world .
Mayfest 06 at UEL Docklands Campus runds from noon to 8 pm with an exciting programme of events, exhibitions, music, dance, poetry and performances, and seminars exploring the rich history and future development of the Docks, will bring together the work of UEL students and staff, local school pupils and community groups in a celebration of culture and creativity.
Highlights include ‘Let’s Misbehave’ by East London Dance, a specially created and choreographed performance exploring the lives and loves of dancers from 16 to 92 years old. There will be performances by East London Chorus and the Noz Voz Anglo-Brazilian Choir and readings from acclaimed author Ronan Bennett and prize-winning poet Paul Farley.
Musical gazebos will provide an ‘in-tents’ aural experience involving live music and DJs, the Nostalgia Steel Band and performances by music groups from local schools will help create a real party atmosphere, and the festival will climax with a 'Green Man' themed carnival procession led by UEL’s famous Samba band.
There will be theatre and music performances throughout the day, and a variety of exhibitions, including A Young Person’s Guide to the Royal Docks and new work by established artists and students alike.
Mark O’Thomas, Director of UEL’s new Institute for Performing Arts Development, said: “Mayfest will be a fantastic celebration of creativity. We are really excited by the programme that has come together and look forward to a wonderful day.”
