Fashion is not only an art, but an international language. London is one of the fashion capitals of the world – and East London is increasingly becoming a style mecca.
On Weds 26 April 2006, leading artist Wessie Ling will present her latest work ‘Mapping Motifs: An explorative journey through fashion, cities and identities’ at the AVA Gallery at the University of East London (UEL) Docklands campus.
For her first solo show in London, Ling takes the viewer on an interactive journey through the winding streets of fashions cities.
City maps of Paris, London, New York, Milan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, with nameless streets have been reworked into a gigantic pattern mapping up the gallery. In the centre of the space six identically cut Chinese blouses will display six individual city maps.
Wessie Ling, born in Hong Kong, received her undergraduate studies in Paris and has earned her PhD in fashion studies. She now works in London and is a Senior Lecturer in London College of Fashion, now the University of the Arts London. Her work explores issues related to cultural identity and fashion and asks questions about the habitual structure of fashion, fashion narrative and fashion globalisation.
UEL’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts has established a national and international reputation. In the most recent government research assessment exercise, Art and Design achieved a 4 rating, confirming its strength at international level, while UEL is rated one of the top teaching centres in the country for teaching Architecture.
The exhibition is open to the public from Wednesday 26th April to Saturday 6th May. Admission is free. For further information, call 020 8223 3405
