Two University of East London (UEL) Architecture graduates have won joint third prize in a major international competition to redesign the former Gestapo headquarters in Berlin.
Jan Liebe, now a UEL tutor, and Cristoph Hadrys, who now practices in Berlin, were among over 600 architects to enter the competition.
Their design for the documentation and visitors’ centre at the former Gestapo building near Potsdamer Platz has won them a cheque for 12,500 Euro, which will be presented to them at the opening of the competition exhibition in Berlin on March 9th 2006.
Jan said: “We are extremely happy to have won this award and really looking forward to entering many more competitions in the future.
"I definitely think that my UEL degree, combined with the diploma that I completed in Switzerland, gave me the perfect preparation for this kind of work, and I would definitely encourage other UEL students and graduates to enter as many architecture competitions as they can.”
Jan and Cristoph’s design will be exhibited in the Martin Gropius Museum in Berlin from 10th March to 14th April 2006.
Ends/.
