Friday 24 February 2006

On Thursday 2nd March, women from Newham’s diverse Asian communities will get together for a day of inspiration, information and guidance on educational opportunities and community services in and around Newham.

The Education and Training Fair for Asian women will be held at the Forest Gate Centre, 1 Woodford Road, Forest Gate, from 10am to 4pm. It is organised by a partnership including Newham Asian Womens Project, NewCEYS, London Borough of Newham, Apna Ghar, Hamara Ghar – Saathi Resource Centre, Behno- Ki- Millan, Job Centre Plus, Aimhigher London East Thames Gateway and the University of East London (UEL) Education and Community Partnerships team.

The Fair will be formally opened at 10.00am and the packed programme includes workshops, an exhibition, musical entertainment, henna painting and a free vegetarian lunch.

Interpreters will be on hand to help Asian women experiencing lack of confidence in using their English language skills. Vegetarian food will be served and a crèche is available.

Jasbir Panesar, Community Development Co-ordinator at the University of East London, has successfully organised a series of Education and Training Fairs for Asian women over the past few years, and has been impressed by the growing interest in the community.

She said: "We are looking forward to an exciting day. Access to educational and employment opportunities are vital to enable people of all ages to achieve their full potential. There are many positive role models for women, and it is inspiring to see the contributions that Asian women are now making in the wider community."
