Over 70 professional psychologists from around the UK gathered at the University of East London’s (UEL) Docklands Campus on Friday 13th January for a conference aimed at updating educational and child psychologists on recent developments in other fields of applied psychology.
The conference, entitled Psychologists United: Catching up with achievements, innovations and developments in applied psychology, was organised by Professor Irvine Gersch and Dr Mark Turner from UEL, alongside Tasneem Gilani, a senior educational psychologist from Redbridge Educational Psychology Service.
Professor Gersch, Programme Director for UEL’s MSc Professional Training in Educational Psychology, recently acted as a consultant to the National Audit Office (NAO) education report, published on Wednesday 11 January. He said: “This was a very timely conference given the major review of the role of educational psychology being carried out by the DfES, the major changes to educational psychology training from September 2006, and the way the whole employment landscape has been changing so rapidly. As a profession we need to be forward-looking and planning for the future, so that our educational psychology graduates are equipped to do well in a fast-changing world.”
Mark Turner, an educational psychologist and senior lecturer at UEL, added: “Today has been a great opportunity to catch up with developments in the wider family of psychologists. Because of the wide range of postgraduate training programmes in applied psychology available at UEL, we’re very interested in how different psychologists can work and train together in the future.”
Dr Sandra Dunsmuir, Chair of the Division of Educational and Child Psychology of the British Psychological Society, was one of the events numerous guest speakers. Sandra said: “Psychologists United has been a very successful conference which has highlighted a lot of the commonalities across the divisions of applied psychology. It has been very stimulating for educational and child psychologists contributing to and defining a positive future.”
UEL’s School of Psychology, based at Stratford, is one of the leading centres for psychology education in the UK, rated 23/24 for teaching quality. UEL is the largest centre for postgraduate psychology education in London
