The University of East London (UEL) opened its doors to all-comers on Wednesday January 11th, as visitors travelled from all over the UK to attend an open evening at UEL’s Docklands and Stratford campuses.
Over five hundred people came to find out more about the programmes on offer at UEL. With the increasingly popular February start option now available in a wide variety of courses, potential students were able to apply for places beginning in just over a month’s time.
UEL staff and students were also on hand to offer advice and guidance on all aspects of student life, including finance, welfare, disability, and careers.
Local visitors included:
Nancy Roberts (18), of Albert Gardens, Stepney, was one of the many visitors to express a strong interest in starting at UEL this February. Nancy, who is hoping to study Creative Writing and Journalism, said: “I’m very interested in starting in February, and very happy that the opportunity is available to begin at UEL so quickly. It seems like a really nice, modern university with great facilities.”
Fola Ogun (24), of Temple Avenue, Dagenham, has been working in IT for a law firm, but is now interested in studying part-time to enhance her career prospects. Fola said: “My degree was great and I’m excited about coming back to do a Masters at UEL. I’m particularly interested in the MSc programme in Computer System Engineering. Having the flexibility of starting courses in February is wonderful - I’m very happy that I don’t have to wait til September.”
Nicola Barnes (24), of Claredale Street, Bethnal Green, is currently studying at another London university, but was attracted to UEL by the unique Book Arts and Illustration degree programme. Nicola said: “I’m very excited as I’ve always loved drawing. I just decided to try other things for a while, but it’s only rekindled my passion and I really hope to write, illustrate and produce children’s books in the future.
“Tonight I’ve been able to speak to staff and tour the School Architecture and Visual Arts. Everything I’ve seen and heard has encouraged me greatly, especially the possibility of studying modules from other artistic disciplines. I’ve already handed in my application form and should hopefully have an interview next week. It’ll be great to be able to start in February because I don’t want to wait.”
Dr Graham Barnfield, Programme Leader in Journalism at UEL, said: “It’s been a very successful open evening. Applications for February starts are well up on last year and that’s clearly reflected in the strong interest shown tonight.”
