Protecting human rights in the war on terror – UEL Public Lecture, February 8

Sunday 29 January 2006

Leading human rights experts will gather at the University of East London's (UEL) Stratford Campus on Thursday 8 February to provide insights into one of the key questions of our times: how human rights can best be protected in the midst of the war on terror.

Professor Martin Scheinin, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights While Countering Terrorism, will deliver a public lecture entitled ‘Protection of human rights in the war on terror: challenges and opportunities’.

John Kissane, Head of Human Rights Compliance and Delivery at the UK Department for Constitutional Affairs, and Tom Porteous, London Director of Human Rights Watch, will provide further commentary on this controversial subject.

Professor Chandra Lekha Sriram, Director of UEL's Centre on Human Rights in Conflict, said: “These are three leading human rights experts and it is a great privilege to welcome them as guest speakers at the University of East London.

“Our School of Law is deeply committed to presenting legal studies with an emphasis on human rights education and research; this lecture will undoubtedly provide much food for thought, not only for our students, but also for anyone with an interest in understanding and developing human rights worldwide."

The Centre on Human Rights in Conflict was established last year at UEL’s School of Law in Stratford. It promotes policy-relevant research and events with the aim of developing greater knowledge of three key areas: human rights and armed conflict, Islamic human rights, and human rights and civil liberties in the war on terror.

‘Protection of human rights in the war on terror: Challenges and opportunities’ will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday 8 February in room 001 of Duncan House on Stratford High Street. For further details, contact Daniel Cherry on 020 8223 2194 or visit www.uel.ac.uk/lectureseries/
