Credit Control extended opening hours

From 9 May, the Credit Control team are trialling an extension their Thursday afternoon drop-in sessions. The sessions will run as usual, daily from 9-11.30am and 1-4.30pm, except on Thursdays with the afternoon session running 1-5.45pm. The no appointment necessary drop-in sessions provide students with information on general payment questions, discuss individual payment queries and difficulties and agree payment plans.

Would you like to learn how to be a community organiser? 

There are a limited number of places left on Ai3305 Community Organising. This is a level three (Sem A) module that runs in the summer. Students taking the module undertake a one week intensive training from the 1st - 5th July before doing a placement with one of five partners: London Citizens, Contextual Theology Centre, Movement for Change, Unison and Unite Community.

If you are interested in taking this module you should; check that your programme of study enables you to take this module as an approved option or University Wide Option, be available full time for the training which takes place between 1-5 July, register for the module in the normal way and have a desire to change things!

The awards are designed to recognize students who make inspirational contributions in volunteering, campaigning, fundraising, and research on social issues. Students can apply for the award, or be nominated by a peer or member of staff from the university. Awards will be granted on the basis of the dedication students have shown to their activities, whether within or outside UEL, and the impacts they have achieved.

Extended Credit Control drop-in sessions

The Credit Control team are extending their Thursday afternoon drop-in session to 5.45pm for a trial period. During the trial period the morning drop-in session will run as usual from 9.00am to 11.30am Monday to Friday and the afternoon session will run from 1pm to 4.30pm daily, except on Thursdays when the session will run from 1pm to 5.45pm. During the drop-in times the Credit Control team are available to speak to students with general payment questions, discuss individual payment queries or difficulties and agree payment plans. No appointment is required to attend the drop in sessions.

Mayor's Low Carbon Prize, in partnership with Siemens, is looking for innovative ideas from London's students to help us slash London's CO2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025.

Enter and you could win a share of the £20k development fund to help you realise your carbon saving idea. If shortlisted, you'll also be considered by Siemens for a paid internship opportunity, which will boost your career and give you valuable industry experience.

Andy Halliday, team manager of the England & Great Britain Men’s Hockey Team, speaks at the last high performance workshop of the year. Andy will be sharing his experiences of looking after the hockey team during London 2012 along with his previous experience of 30yrs with the metropolitan police, incuding a stint in the armed police unit. He has witnessed the very best and worst of London, including the London bombings and the 2012 Olympics.

Beyond 2012: the Olympics and the Regeneration of East London 

The headline promise of the London 2012 Games was that they would benefit East London’s communities and regenerate the area.  This translated into the concept of ‘convergence’: “within 20 years the communities who host the 2012 Games will have the same social and economic chances as their neighbours across London”. The progress made and the challenges still lying ahead will be discussed by two guest speakers: Prof Tim Butler, King’s College London and Roger Taylor, Growth Boroughs Unit.

FREE Falun Gong (Qi Gong) sessions

Natalie (Tilly) Nesbitt from the Children's Garden is offering staff FREE weekly Falun Gong sessions starting from 2 May. Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese Qi Gong practice involving both meditation and gentle slow standing exercises so comfortable clothing is desirable. If you are interested just turn up on the day. (Staff do not need to commit to more than one session at a time.) The sessions will be available on a first come first served basis.

Neo-liberalism and new wars versus social justice and peace

All are welcome to the Centre for Cultural Studies Research's lecture on 'Conflicting legacies Hugo Chavez and Margaret Thatcher' by Tariq Ali. Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written over two dozen books on world politics and history. His novels, including the series known as the 'Islam Quintet', have been translated into many languages. He is a longstanding editor of the New Left Review and writes regularly for the London Review of Books and the Guardian.

Students Attitutes to Enterprise

Karina Berzins, Research Fellow
Continuum: Centre for Widening Participation Policy Studies, University of East London, will be presenting the results of an online survey delivered to UEL students enquiring about their attitudes towards enterprise, and entrepreneurial activity. The findings show that UEL students are a particularly entrepreneurial group, with over 5% of our students already running a business. Our students are also well versed in self-employment, and many of our learners want to develop their own business ideas in the future. The findings contribute to a richer understanding of our students’ desires and work ambitions.

Online learning pedagogies – workshop series

UELConnect are running a series of half day workshops exploring a range of issues related to online pedagogies. The workshops will include presentations and discussions facilitated by external academic experts engaged in online/distance learning. We expect five workshops in total, which will be followed by an open forum in September, leading to the development of a UEL approach to online learning. All welcome but you need to reserve a place! Workshops planned are:
25 June 2pm – 5pm Docklands Campus: Integrating simulations effectively into the design and delivery of online courses.
28 June 9.30am – 12.30pm: A holistic approach to designing courses for delivery online.
