Credit Control extended opening hours

From 9 May, the Credit Control team are trialling an extension their Thursday afternoon drop-in sessions. The sessions will run as usual, daily from 9-11.30am and 1-4.30pm, except on Thursdays with the afternoon session running 1-5.45pm. The no appointment necessary drop-in sessions provide students with information on general payment questions, discuss individual payment queries and difficulties and agree payment plans.

The Student Money Advice and Rights team are conducting research into crisis borrowing amongst students at UEL. If you want to be in with a chance of winning an iPad 2, take five minutes of your time to complete an online questionnaire on what you might do if you were in a financial crisis, and what some of you have actually done.

Would you like to learn how to be a community organiser? 

There are a limited number of places left on Ai3305 Community Organising. This is a level three (Sem A) module that runs in the summer. Students taking the module undertake a one week intensive training from the 1st - 5th July before doing a placement with one of five partners: London Citizens, Contextual Theology Centre, Movement for Change, Unison and Unite Community.

If you are interested in taking this module you should; check that your programme of study enables you to take this module as an approved option or University Wide Option, be available full time for the training which takes place between 1-5 July, register for the module in the normal way and have a desire to change things!

The awards are designed to recognize students who make inspirational contributions in volunteering, campaigning, fundraising, and research on social issues. Students can apply for the award, or be nominated by a peer or member of staff from the university. Awards will be granted on the basis of the dedication students have shown to their activities, whether within or outside UEL, and the impacts they have achieved.

Get involved, get volunteering!


Do you want to improve your CV? Meet people? Eat good food (for free)? And develop your communication skills? The Institute for Health and Human Development (IHHD) need YOUR help to deliver fun community engagement events over the next few months.


The World Café Events are where local people discuss ways to create healthier and happier communities and IHHD need volunteers to oversee the process, scribe conversations (in English) and help set up the cafes. The first café event is taking place in South Woodford, however there are plenty more events after this one.

IHHD also need volunteers to help promote these cafes beforehand, during our street interviewing process.

The Credit Control team are extending their Thursday afternoon drop-in session to 5.45pm for a trial period. During the trial period the morning drop-in session will run as usual from 9.00am to 11.30am Monday to Friday and the afternoon session will run from 1pm to 4.30pm daily, except on Thursdays when the session will run from 1pm to 5.45pm. All are welcome to the Centre for Cultural Studies Research's lecture on 'Conflicting legacies Hugo Chavez and Margaret Thatcher' by Tariq Ali.

Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written over two dozen books on world politics and history. His novels, including the series known as the 'Islam Quintet', have been translated into many languages. He is a longstanding editor of the New Left Review and writes regularly for the London Review of Books and the Guardian.

FREE Falun Gong (Qi Gong) sessions

Natalie (Tilly) Nesbitt from the Children's Garden is offering staff FREE weekly Falun Gong sessions starting from 2 May. Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese Qi Gong practice involving both meditation and gentle slow standing exercises so comfortable clothing is desirable. If you are interested just turn up on the day. (Staff do not need to commit to more than one session at a time.) The sessions will be available on a first come first served basis.

Horizon 2020 EU funding programme

Edward Heelas, a representative from the UK Research Office (UKRO) will be visiting UEL to talk about Horizon 2020. Horizon 2020 is the new EU funding programme for Research and Innovation running from 2014 – 2020 with a total budget of €80 billion. The event will give an overview of the funding opportunities and will outline the Horizon 2020 programme. The event will give you an opportunity to find out more about accessing funding for your research projects and about the support services UKRO provides with EU funding calls. There will also be a Q&A with Edward Heelas.
