Professor Dan Goodley — De-individualising disability: Understanding psychologisation and alterity

Dan Goodley

Dan Goodley is Professor of Psychology and Disability Studies, the father of two girls, ally to the self-advocacy group Huddersfield People First and a long-suffering Nottingham Forest fan. His research and teaching aims to shake up dominant myths in psychology as well as contributing, in some small way, to the development of critical disability studies theories that understand and eradicate disablism. This talk will draw, in part, on a book due out in 2010 An introduction to disability studies: psyche, culture and society (Sage).

Guy Holmes — Community-based groupwork and demedicalising misery

Guy’s works as a clinical psychologist in what used to be called the NHS. His book Psychology in the real world: community-based groupwork comes out in early 2010. More about him and his groupwork can be found at www.shropsych.org/psychologyintherealworld.htm.

Derek Summerfield — Who says refugees and asylum-seekers have mental health problems?

Currently an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College. Formerly Research/Teaching Associate, Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford; consultant to Oxfam; Medical Foundation for Care of Victims of Torture, London.
