This Semester A module is compulsory for all single-honours and PSS Major students, and is available to any doing PSS Joint or Minor degrees. It aims to complement the other core modules of Part 1 of the PSS programme by providing a wide-ranging introduction to some of the general issues involved in a psychosocial approach to contemporary society, and in being a student of such an approach. It will thus combine examples in specific topic areas of how questions can be posed and answers sought with IT and study skills training, and with an exploration of some of the psychosocial dimensions of the experience of higher education. It will also aim to provide an intellectually integrative and socially cohesive seminar/workshop experience.
The inter-relations between knowledge, skills and experience in undergraduate learning.
Study skills: using lectures and seminars, selecting and locating sources, reading, note-taking, essay-writing, referencing, seminar presentations, preparing for exams, general organisation. Presentation of work; why are grammar and spelling important? Other literacy issues and their social context.
Information technology : basic IT skills, i.e. Windows, using the University e-mail system, using 'Word' to essay-writing level, using the internet.
Taster topics: a number of topics that reflect issues that will be presented in greater detail further on in students' degree programme will be introduced.
