Psychosocial Studies Modules

Psychosocial Studies can be studied as a 3 year honours degree Psychosocial Studies BA or as a 3 year honours degree programme Psychosocial Studies with Professional Practice  BA. The latter programme includes a substantial placement element in years 2 and 3. This is often a way for people without much work experience to gain invaluable experience in a field they want to pursue a career in, or as a way for people with experience to explore that and gain academic acknowledgement for it. It is also possible to study Psychosocial Studies in combination with other subjects.

The academic year is divided into 2 semesters and you normally take 3 modules per semester

The degree introduces a number of theoretical approaches and applies those ideas to a range of contemporary issues and problems.

At level 1:

You are asked to study modules that introduce you to central ideas in psychology Psychology in Context , and Identity and Culture: Psychosocial Perspectives, a module that introduces some of the core themes of the programme. Another module called  Psychosocial Perspectives on Individual Development introduces you to issues of child and individual development. We also ask you to take a module called  Knowledge, Skills and Experience. An important aspect of this unit is participation in a tutor group that can help you learn and begin to use the necessary skills to be successful in your degree studies.

We also advise first year students to take a further module called Psychology in Practice;

At level 2:

We ask you to develop these central theoretical studies Individual Development, and Qualitative Methods in Psychosocial Studies, but then you have a series of options to study (see below).

At level 3

You will carry out a dissertation which is worth the same as 2 modules. This is your own piece of research. Other than that you have to make a choice of which options to study.

Options Available at Level 2 and 3

You will be able to choose freely between the various options available but it may be helpful to think in terms of there being two strands of specialist modules:

In addition there are options available in:

Entry Requirements

Our usual requirements, in common with many other degree programmes at UEL, are for 240 UCAS points invovling A levels, or GNVQ or BTEC equivalent, or an appropriate Access programme. However we see the widening of access to higher education as an important goal, and mature students without formal qualifications are also welcome if they can demonstrate they have the skills and commitment to do a degree.
