Members of the group are engaged in research activity that combines the rich and distinctive tradition of psychoanalytic sociology at UEL with the development of new interdisciplinary research projects that apply psychoanalytic ideas to a range of social and cultural phenomena.
The group's work has two main foci. The first is the application of psychoanalytic ideas in the study of contemporary culture, media and society, including implications for political and social theory, and for the understanding of cinema, TV and consumption, addressing the emotional aspects of social and cultural phenomena. The second is clinical and observation research, and its relevance for the enhancement of education, child development and welfare practice. Both foci signify the development of more rigorous academic approaches to a field (psychoanalysis) that was previously largely excluded from universities and formal research cultures. Here UEL, with its Tavistock partnership, has been a leading pioneer.
The group’s current research activities include education, political culture, cinema, sexuality and the body, and the development of new methodologies in the field of humanities and social science. Further details can be found on the web pages of members listed below.
