The Applied Criminology Unit (ACU) is located within the University of East London’s School of Law and Social Sciences. The Unit comprises of a small team of academic researchers and practitioners from the fields of criminology, youth studies, community development, gender studies and critical race theory. Through its teaching programmes and applied research projects the Unit is primarily interested in engaging with, and deconstructing, the social policy ideas and political discourses - that in turn inform policing and crime prevention practice - with regards urban violence and crime
The ACU will aim to foster collaboration between practitioners and academics interested in applying criminological theory and research to real world Justice Sector settings in order to facilitate, the development and subsequent evaluation of community-based/led preventative solutions. In addition, the Unit will continue to engage with a broad range of Justice Sector agencies to develop continuing professional development opportunities, and enhance student Employability.
Putting policy into practice is at the heart of the ACU. The programmed of seminars and workshops organised via the Unit’s Practitioner Forum, provides an ongoing platform for participants to discuss ideas, share good practice and critique new policy developments. Previous Forum seminars have included guest speakers addressing topical issues such as ‘Working with young people at-risk from gang involvement’, ‘Mentoring as effective intervention’, ‘Lessons about gang prevention from the city of [the Wire]’.
