Brief biography

Dr Saleem Sheikh trained as a Solicitor in the City working for some leading law firms specialising initially in commercial property and later in company commercial. He later worked in the Middle East specialising in international company commercial laws, undertaking joint venture work; shareholders’ agreements’ takeovers and mergers; MBOs; MBIs; franchising; sponsorship; intellectual property; service agreements; management agreements; commercial terms and conditions; consultancy agreements; due diligence in connection with acquisitions; establishing companies internationally; gas agreements; commercial property work including business tenancies; landlord and tenant; sale of business as a going concern; assignment leases and goodwill; and commercial property development.

During the 1990s. Dr Sheikh developed a particular interest in corporate social responsibilities and international corporate governance, and made effective representations to the Cadbury Committee, Greenbury Committee and the Higgs Committee on various corporate governance issues, which led to the Combined Code.

Dr Sheikh conducted his doctoral research on comparative legal aspects of corporate social responsibilities and spent some time at Harvard University

Dr Sheikh has also lectured extensively on continuing professional development courses both nationally and internationally.

He is the editor of Sweet and Maxwell’s International Company Commercial Law Review.

Current research and publications

  • Dr Sheikh is currently writing a major text book on company law which will be an annual publication. The target audience will be academics, practitioners, directors, company secretaries and students. It will set out legal aspects of company law supported by checklists, forms and useful practical precedents
