The London Borough of Newham: Night Time Economy
Full report coming to the site soon...
This exploration of Newham’s night life is being conducted after a successful tender to London Borough of Newham. LERI are examining the opportunities and challenges facing Newham in the development of its night time economy and reporting to the council. The project relies on a number of methods and sources of evidence; including area-based case studies, stakeholder interviews, focus groups and questionnaires.
The borough’s night time economy, as it develops successfully, can become an important reputational marker with positive knock on effects for the social, economic and cultural life of the borough. There are clear economic gains attaching to related business expenditure, job creation and certain important “invisible” gains – relating to the desirability of the borough as a residential and visitor location.
The 2010 target on Newham as a “place to live and work” also makes this work timely, especially in the context of some recent legislation: e.g. the 2003 Licensing Act and the 2005 Gambling act.
We agree that a study of the Newham Night Time Economy (NNTE) will be a helpful and timely contribution to a strategy to address challenges and opportunities in Newham – bringing palpable benefits for residents (current and prospective), visitors, and local services and to businesses
