Rainham is a crucial geographical location for the development of the Thames Gateway – it is located at the junction of the M25 and the A13 and well connected on rail links. Famous in equal measure for its bird sanctuary and its waste disposal sites, there is a compelling case for the area to receive some kind of further sustainable development, producing jobs and other spin off benefits for the community. As a supplementary method for exploring local opinion two focus groups were held at the CEME centre in Havering. The groups were well attended by Rainham residents keen to ensure a good outcome for Rainham and its surroundings. The research team fed the main findings back to Havering and Sun International (the casino operator most directly linked to the Havering bid). The project found that
This project is one of a number of LERI consultancies examining leisure and entertainment related activities in the Gateway. Alongside analyses of cultural policy and housing development, it is crucial that diverse and sustainable leisure offerings are built into the fabric of the developing region.
