The results of a detailed study on housing Thames Gateway conducted by Dr Penny Bernstock of the London East Research Institute for leading law firm Davies Arnold Cooper were published on 28 September.
The study draws on data about current and planned developments and compares them with published indices of housing need. It found that 82% of all new properties planned or built in Thames Gateway between 2000 and 2005 were one and two bedroom flats, and identified a significant increase in housing density with planning permissions being granted on schemes with densities higher than those indicated in borough plans.
Details of the findings can be downloaded from the Davies Arnold Cooper web site http://www.dac.co.uk/whatsnew/uploads/ThamesGatewaystudybyDAC.pdf
The London East Research Institute conducts research and consultancy on issues of urban regeneration, focusing on the economic, social and cultural development of East London and the Thames Gateway. We aim to provide information, research and teaching resources that enable policy-makers, businesses and local communities understand the processes and impacts of development and thereby help optimise regeneration outcomes.
