Library System FAQ

We have recently upgraded to a new library management system, which will improve our service to all library users. Benefits include faster, seamless access to resources, and a more user-friendly library environment. The following FAQs should help to answer any queries you have. If anything isn't answered below or you require help in using any of our services, please don’t hesitate to contact us or Ask A Librarian online.

What should I do if I get an error message when I try to take out or return books using the self service machine?

If an error message appears when you try to take out or return books using the self service machine, please take your books to a member of staff at the library helpdesk. If the desk is unstaffed, unfortunately you won’t be able to take out or return your book.

Why am I waiting so long for my requested book?

At this time of year, there can often be a wait for requested books, particularly core books. In addition, system problems mean that sometimes books are taking a while to be processed. If you have been waiting a long time for a book you have requested, please come and speak to a member of staff at the library helpdesk or email Ask a Librarian

Why haven’t I received an email telling me which books have been renewed?

We will send you an email if the book you have borrowed is requested by another student. We will shortly be sending out statements each month to let you know which books you have on loan and when they are due back.

How do I know if a book I have borrowed has to be brought back?

We will send you an email if the book you have borrowed is requested by another student. You then need to bring it back as soon as possible.

If I haven’t received an email telling me to bring my book back, will I have to pay fines?

Fines are suspended at the moment.

Why can’t I request books from the Library Search kiosks?

Because of security issues, the kiosks can’t connect to the internet. IT Services are working on this at the moment.
