Subject Librarians can help you make more effective use of the library and library resources, including e-books, e-journals and journal databases. Support can either be on a one-to-one basis, or by attending library inductions. We offer also an Enquiries Desk for subject-specific advice. We can also help you find books on the shelves! Don't be afraid to ask! If you miss your the induction session at the beginning of the academic year, please contact your Subject Librarian or use our Ask-A-Librarian form.
Subject Librarians are closely linked with University Schools in order to fully support learning, teaching and research. Each school has dedicated Subject Librarians who are happy to discuss your needs and work with you to provide information support. LLS staff need to be kept informed of programme course changes and developments and teaching staff need to be aware of new initiatives and developments within the information world.
LLS is represented on all formal committees of the University from Academic Board through to Programme Committees. It is vital for our librarians to be invited to these committees. We also welcome invitations from all schools to their Learning and Teaching Committees and we urge all LILTS to invite their librarian.
Some Schools have designated Library Liaison staff who meet regularly with their Subject Librarian.
The Library Liaison staff also act as the focus for their department for ordering new resources. Subject librarians advise on and implement these purchasing decisions. Feedback from students and staff via surveys are carried out regularly and acted upon as appropriate.
Endnote allows researchers, scholarly writers, staff and students to search online bibliographic databases, organise references and images, and create bibliographies instantly. Benefits of Endnote are as follows:
Endnote can be found under Research Software on the University Menu. Please see our Help & Support section for Endnote Tutorials. Contact your Subject Librarian for Endnote training. Sessions will last for a maximum of 2 hrs and 10 students per class.
Please allow sufficient time to liaise with Subject Librarians when drawing up reading lists, as students will generally expect items on these reading list to be available in the Library and Learning Services. It is important to place requests for new books in good time and to ensure whether there are sufficient copies at the right loan level, or if titles are not in stock, that they are ordered in good time.
When planning for new programmes or courses or other external partnerships, please make sure to involve your librarian so that all aspects of library provision are factored in. More information is available from our collection management policy on the web.
Staff - If you would like to suggest a book, please contact your Subject Librarian for further information.
Students – please speak to your module leader, who will be able to advise you and forward your request.
Off-air recordings
Staff can request off-air recordings via their Subject librarian. Requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the programme airing.
LLS can support Schools with any reviews in which they are involved. This can include assistance in the preparation of Self-Assessment Documents, the provision of a Library services guide which can be sent to reviewers a month in advance of the review date, and conducting library tours for the visiting assessors.
It is important that we work closely with schools throughout the review process. Please involve the library and your librarian once the planning is underway. We will attend the appropriate meetings. Involve your librarian in both the QAA and audit process.
