Journal databases and useful websites

Journal Databases

Databases provide references, abstracts and, in some cases, the full text of journal articles. A complete A-Z list of all databases is available on the library website.

Below are the main databases for psychology, counselling, coaching and related subjects. For tips and advice on getting the most out of them, see UEL Library Psychology blog.

  • EBSCO PsycINFO is is the key database for all psychology, guidance, counselling and coaching topics. It provides abstracts for over three million articles from over 2,500 different journals. Some full-text content is supplied by PsycARTICLES (all content from PsycARTICLES is automatically included in PsycINFO).
  • PEP-WEB (PEP Archive 1 Version 12 (1871-2009) release) contains the complete text and illustrations of 49 premier journals in psychoanalysis, 96 classic psychoanalytic books, and the full text and editorial notes of the 24 volumes of the Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud.
  • There are several multi-disciplinary databases which cover psychology, counselling and coaching related articles. These include ScienceDirect, EBSCO Academic Search Complete and Web of Knowledge.
  • For Clinical Psychology, it is also worth searching on EBSCO CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature). For Coaching Psychology, have a look at EBSCO Business Source Complete.

APA Referencing

All sources you read, quote or paraphrase from when writing and producing work for University must be properly referenced. Many courses in the School of Psychology require you to use APA style of referencing. The library is well stocked with the latest 6th edition of the official guides to APA style. They can be found at the following locations:

  • Publication manual of the APA (6th edition) - 808.06615 PUB
  • Concise guide to APA style (6th edition) - 808.06615 CON
  • Mastering APA style: student's workbook and training guide (6th edition) - 808.06615 MAS

  • Displaying your findings (6th edition) - 001.4226 NIC
  • Presenting your findings ( 6th edition) - 001.4226 NIC

There are also some helpful online guides, as recommended by your tutors:

IMPORTANT: Always check with your tutors to find out which style of referencing you are expected to use. Most courses in the School of Psychology use APA style, but a small number use Harvard style referencing.

If you are required to use Harvard style, then it is highly recommended you use the University's official guide to Harvard: Cite Them Right (available in the library at 800.027 PEA and also from the bookshop).
