Library Policies - Collection Management Policy

Donations & Purchase by staff

Donations

  • The LLS welcomes donations from lecturers, students or any other individual as long as they meet the same criteria as for selection of new stock.
  • Donations will be accepted on the proviso that those unwanted will be disposed of as the LLS sees fit.
  • Donations should be sent to Subject librarians who will select only those items which are relevant to the university and which meet our current selection criteria for new stock i.e. current, relevant, appropriate to level of study and space availability, etc.
  • Donations which form part of a reading list will be accepted.
  • Any donations accepted will have to be integrated into the collection.
  • Donations which duplicate items already in stock or are in poor physical condition will not be accepted.
  • Unwanted donations will be disposed of either by giving them away to charitable organisations or to students.
  • Where a large collection which will require funding to maintain is donated, i.e. an archive, the Director of Library and Learning Services or his appointee will make the decision to accept.

Purchase by staff

  • Staff will not be reimbursed for items purchased for addition to the Library stock. This follows normal UEL accounting procedures.
