Stock selection
The following criteria will apply when selecting stock:
- We rely in part on teaching staff to recommend resources to subject librarians.
- However the selection of new stock should ideally be shared between teaching staff and the subject librarian.
- They are aware of the total stock and the demands being placed upon it. This partnership is invaluable.
Criteria for stock selection
- Relevance to teaching and learning. The priority is to meet current course needs, firstly reflecting reading lists and any other titles recommended to students, etc. Another priority is to provide a range of authoritative wider reading.
- Appropriate to level of study.
- Currency of content
- Language – most purchases will be in English unless the material is intended for Schools where foreign languages form part of the course.
- Value for money and price. In most cases paperbacks will be purchased instead of hard back. This is cost effective.
- Space available in the Library and Learning Centres.
- In the case of electronic resources ease of access and use, installation and networking, and existence of appropriate licensing arrangements.
- Availability of the information to multiple users and off campus access.
