Collection Management Policy
Managing our collection for the benefit of users
The Library and Learning Services aims to develop, maintain and make accessible collections of information resources that meet the learning, teaching, and development needs of our community.
This will be achieved by:
- Proactive liaison between Library staff and our users, particularly through our structure of academic liaison staff and subject librarians.
- Informed selection of information content and formats that will support teaching, and other programmes
- Efficient acquisition of materials and / or rights of access for users through purchasing, licensing, borrowing and other means.
- Effective cataloguing and display/storage of items to provide users with convenient intellectual and physical access to our resources.
- Judicious stock editing/relocation programmes to maintain a collection to meet current needs.
- Selective repair and replacement of items to maintain collections in optimum physical condition.
Funding
- An annual budget is allocated to the Director of Library and Learning Services by the University to cover expenditure on books, periodicals, electronic resources, interlibrary loans, etc.
- The funds are initially allocated to schools according to a formula which takes into account the number of students in a School.
- In some cases the average current cost of materials in a subject area is also taken into consideration.
- Subject librarians will inform Heads of Schools, Field Leaders and lecturers acting as Library Liaison staff, of the fund allocation in the start of every year and every two months thereafter.
