Overdue items

We will automatically renew all items on your account as long as they are not requested by another user and you have no blocks on your library account.

We’ll send  you two recall emails if you need to return a book because someone else has requested it.

If you have a requested item and it is not brought back when it is due, you will not be able to borrow any more items until it has been returned. If you receive a recall email from us, please return the books listed to the library as soon as possible to avoid incurring any fines.  Fines are charged at £1.00 per day.

Fines

The following charges apply to all students and staff for items not returned on time:

All loans £1.00 per day, suspended for 7 days. If the item is returned within 7 days of the due date, no fines will be charged. On the eighth day, fines will be charged from the date the book was due (maximum £10 per item).

Why will I be charged fines?

You will only be charged fines if you don’t bring back a book that has been requested by another student. Students have told us that they are waiting too long for their requested books because they are not being returned on time. We charge fines to encourage you to bring back requested books.

You will be able to accrue fines up to £25 for overdue items to allow you to use the self-service machines through the night. If your fines reach £25, you will not be able to borrow any more items from the library until a payment is made to reduce the amount owed to under £25. For your own peace of mind, we encourage you to clear your fines as soon as possible. There are several ways you can do this:

  1. By 24 hour coin payment machine in each library
  2. In person at any library between 9am-4.45pm weekdays
  3. By phone between 9am-4.45pm

Lost and stolen books

If you lose your library book, you must report it at once to the library helpdesk or fines may be charged if it is recalled and it becomes overdue. We will allow you sometime to search for the book, but if you cannot find it the replacement cost must be paid. In some cases, you may be able to purchase a duplicate copy of the lost book - please speak to your Subject Librarian about this.

If your library book is stolen you must report it at once to the library helpdesk, or fines may be charged if it is recalled and it becomes overdue. You are liable for the full replacement cost of any stolen books, but, on production of a crime reference number from the police station where the theft was reported, we will only charge half the replacement cost. In some cases, you may be able to purchase a duplicate copy of the lost book - please speak to your Subject Librarian about this.

End of semester fines block

From time to time we operate a fines block, requesting that you clear all outstanding library fines from the previous semester. If you do not clear all your fines when asked to do so, your account may be blocked and you will not be able to borrow or renew library items until you have done so. Reminder e-mails will be sent to all students warning that their accounts may be blocked and giving them plenty of time to clear their fines. Payment can be made in person at any library or over the phone.
