Library services during the Olympic Games

Library and Olympics image

Library access

Students requiring library access between 12 July and 26 July should contact their Registrar. Registrars then need to email the student, confirming they require library access, which the student should then print and bring with them to Reception to gain access to campus.

From Monday 9th July until Monday 10th September, only UEL staff and students with swipe ID cards will be allowed access to libraries.

Due to major traffic disruption, all UEL libraries will be

CLOSED from 27th July-12th August

But we’ll still be offering you a great off-campus service!

Check here for library opening hours before and after the Games period.

 Library loans

You’ll be able to borrow 25 items from 9th July-1st Oct.  All books on loan will be renewed until 1st October, and fines will be suspended for July, August and September.

Check:  Make sure you bring back any books you don’t need and pay any outstanding fines before the summer.

 Access to online resources

You’ll have 24/7 access to our full range of online resources, using your Athens password.

Check: If your Athens password isn’t up-to-date, email UEL-Athens@uel.ac.uk

 Online help

Ask a Librarian will be available from 10am-5pm weekdays, and you’ll be able to e-mail a librarian 24/7 - all enquiries will be answered within 24 hours weekdays.

‘Info skills’ will be available 24/7 for a range of online tools, guides and videos to help start your research.

Check:  Put these addresses in your favourites:

Ask a Librarian:  uel.ac.uk/askalibrarian/

Infoskills:  uel.ac.uk/infoskills

Subject support

Your Subject Librarian has compiled information and resources specifically for your studies.

Check: Check out your subject support pages on the website: uel.ac.uk/library/

Electronic inter-library loans

You’ll still be able to order electronic articles from the British Library if we don’t subscribe to them: uel.ac.uk/interlibrary/

 Access to other Libraries

The SCONUL Access Scheme allows you to visit other libraries.

Check:

  • Make sure the library you want to visit is open over the Olympic Games period: where do you want to go?
  • Don’t forget your Sconul Access card (available from any UEL library) and UEL ID card – you won’t get in without them.

Services unavailable

From Monday 9th July some areas of Stratford Library, including all silent study areas, will not be accessible. Students who wish to study quietly may wish to use Duncan House library which has quiet/silent study areas.

During the 2 ½ weeks closure, we won’t be able to offer:

Loans or requests for UEL books and inter-library loan books (from Friday 5th July until Monday 10th September), DVDs; study space; printed journals; printing or photocopying. We also won't be able to access individual library accounts.

Please be aware that from Monday 9th July, only UEL staff and students with swipe ID cards will be allowed access to all libraries.
