I need more IT help in Docklands Library |
From October 2012, we will be able to offer four ways of getting IT help in the library: roving staff will be available during the day on the ground floor; library staff on the 1st floor helpdesk will help with basic IT queries; IT staff offer phone help, available 24/7 on x2468; or you can email servicedesk@uel.ac.uk where IT staff will respond to your query. |

Can I be involved in the new ST library? |
Students were invited to a morning evaluation session of proposed new furniture for ST library. |
|
I can understand why students can’t eat in the library but sometimes we need a hot drink |
We have revised the rules to allow hot drinks in the library from Semester A 2012. |
|
It’s impossible to study overnight in the library when some students have camped out on the 2nd floor |
From September 2012 we are going to revise the rules and close the 2nd floor area overnight so that this problem doesn’t arise. |
|
I like the way we can choose which ebooks we want to read and you’ll buy them for us – is this going to carry on? |
The pilot project was very successful so we’re going to continue it in the new semester. |
|
One week loans are inadequate for students on particular doctorate courses as many only attend once a month. |
Some Professional Doctorate students can now have extended loans by request at the helpdesk – this will be done automatically in the new semester
|
|
Student rep asked for more/better scanners in the library as the course requires their use for presentations. |
We’ve passed this request onto IT Services. |
|
What can you do about students who don't return requested items back as the fines are cheaper than paying for the books. |
We will be introducing some measures to encourage students to return requested items as soon as they are recalled. This includes raising fines. |
|
ST toilets are a disgrace |
Toilets are checked regularly, but they are very heavily used. We’ve put up new notices encouraging students to respect other users. Nviro, the cleaning company are contacted immediately there are any problems. |
We've made a number of changes to our physical environment this summer which we believe will make a positive improvement to the library environment and your learning experience:
More silent study space at Docklands Library
In response to your feedback, we have added another silent study space in Docklands library. This means that you now have more choice in how you want to study.
A new library for Stratford
A new £13m, state-of-the-art library is one of the priorities in our university’s Estates Strategy. We have just started planning the new library which will transform library and learning services for our users at Stratford. We have been asking your views on what you would like to see in the new building which is due to be completed in 2013.
Our new online catalogue
Last August we launched our new state-of-the-art library system. It is much more than just a catalogue: it is a one-stop resource discovery and delivery tool. Now you can locate and obtain accurate, high-quality information quickly. Check out what the new system can do for you at: primo.uel.ac.uk
We will renew your books for you!
We’ve listened to what you’ve said about how difficult it can be to renew your loans, and so now we will do it for you! Just check your emails each week to find out if your books have been renewed or if you have to return them. Of course, we can’t renew any items that have been requested by other users, or if your account is blocked for some reason.
Collect your reserved books yourself
Good News for all students and staff! You can now pick up your reserved book from the new self-service area at any time. Books are shelved in ID number order, so just find your book and check it out at the self-service machines. Available 24/7.
Book a library PC online
Want to book a Stratford or Docklands PC from home? Just follow the MyPC link from any PC, on or off-campus, 24/7. Your PC will be waiting for you when you come into the library. PCs can be booked for 2 hour sessions up to 7 days in advance.
Short-stay PCs
For students who just need quick access to a PC to print, email or book a PC we have installed four “Short-stay” PCs in the Media Area at Stratford Library. You can log on to these PCs for 10 minutes – just enough time to book a PC or print your essay.
Extended hours for our online helpdesk
Our online Ask-a Librarian email and chat service enables you to ask questions from any PC, on or off-campus. You can now chat online to a librarian every weekday between 1-7pm during term-time and from 1-5pm at weekends, or you can e-mail your questions at any time and a librarian will answer you within two working days.
