WORLD AIDS DAY: LEADERSHIP IN HIV PREVENTION

By Dr Frances Haste, Public Health Consultant, Directorate of Public Health, Newham Primary Care Trust (PCT) AND Professor of Social Sciences Corinne Squire and Co-director of UEL's Centre for Narrative Research

Leadership in HIV prevention is 2007’s World AIDS Campaign appeal to governments, policy makers and regional health authorities, to ensure they meet the many targets set in the fight against HIV and AIDS, especially the promise of universal access to HIV treatment, care, support and prevention services, by 2010.

Public Health consultant, Dr Frances Haste, explains what Newham PCT is doing to combat the spread of HIV infection and outlines how the whole community can become involved; including: community groups, faith groups, families and educators.

Professor Corinne Squire recently conducted a three-year study of 37 ordinary people affected by HIV in South Africa. In this lecture Professor Squire offers an overview of the country’s epidemic within the context of the global HIV pandemic. The South African epidemic provides key insights into numerous HIV issues affecting both developed and developing countries.

Worldwide, 39.5 million people are infected with the AIDS virus, including 2.3 million children, according to UNAIDS estimates. In 2006 alone, around 4.3 million people became infected with the virus. Almost half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25, and will die from AIDS before they are 35. Although 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations, HIV today, is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.

This Public Lecture is part of a university-wide event taking place at UEL: Stratford campus 26 November and Docklands campus 29 November.  The Docklands Atrium and foyer of University House in Stratford are hosting information fairs with stands from a variety of organisations and groups encouraging access to HIV testing and one-to-one counselling and sexual health assessments.  Photographic exhibitions, organised by Newham PCT and UEL  take place at both campuses the week beginning 19 November.

World Aids Day is 1 December, 2007.

All welcome - admission free.
