Dr Clarissa Augustinus is Chief of the Land & Tenure Section Shelter Branch at UN-HABITAT, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. UN-HABITAT is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all
Land rights is an important issue in the developing world, where mass migration to the cities has created ‘shanty towns’ and secure tenure is a means of tackling poverty. In rural areas poor tenant farmers often have little recourse to law if they are evicted from their land.
In 2005, Dr Augustinus assisted Dr Hilary Lim and Siraj Sait of the UEL School of Law as they undertook a one-year UN-funded consultancy on Islam, development and human rights, with particular emphasis on land, property and housing rights.Their new book ‘Human Rights in Islam: Law, Property and Access to Land’ examines human rights, land tenure, women’s rights, inheritance, endowment, and Islamic banking and finance.
Admission to Dr Augustinus’ lecture is free. To register your place, please contact Sharon Senner on 020 8223 2836 or senner@uel.ac.uk
