This seminar brings together early career researchers associated with the Centre for Cultural Studies Research (CCSR) at the University of East London. It aims to provide a snapshot of the kind of work currently being done in cultural studies, and a reflection on cultural studies as a discipline, tradition, and research practice.
The seminar will be followed by an informal reception and launch for Ben Pitcher's new book The Politics of Multiculturalism, Palgrave Macmillan.
Speakers include:
Sarah Baker is completing her doctoral thesis entitled 'Retro style, class and the home: the making and unmaking of value' at the University of East London. She has taught on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in cultural and media studies at the University of Hertfordshire and the University of East London. Sarah is currently writing a number of entries for the Encyclopedia of Consumer Culture to be published by Sage.
Rebecca Bramall is a Senior Lecturer in media studies at the University of Brighton.
Karen Cross completed her PhD in Cultural Studies at University of East London in 2007. Her thesis 'Training the Eye of the Photographer: the education of the amateur' focused on relational histories of professional and amateur image making and their containment within the contemporary field of photography education. Now a Lecturer in Cultural Studies at Roehampton University she continues to work on snapshot and amateur photography and is interested in theorisations of the amateur and the everyday.
Joanne is completing her PhD in the field of media and cultural studies at the University of East London. She possesses qualifications both in Global Media and Communication (Broadcasting). Her research interests include discourses relating to media and globalization including its cultural and political implications on postcolonial nations, particularly within Asia. Joanne is a former journalist with Malaysia's leading newspaper - The Star Publications.
Ben Pitcher teaches cultural studies and sociology at a number of different institutions in London. His research interests include anti-racism and the contemporary politics of race. He is associate editor of darkmatter journal www.darkmatter101.org.
