Bourdieu: a 'Judgement of History'

Derek Robbins is Professor of International Social Theory at UEL and one of the world’s leading scholars on the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. This research symposium will bring together five of the key contributors to the recent special edition of Theory, Culture and Society on Bordieu's work and its influence.

Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) was an acclaimed sociologist whose work employed methods drawn from a wide range of disciplines, from philosophy and literary theory to sociology and anthropology. Acommittedpolitical activist and staunch opponent of modern forms of globalization, Bourdieu saw sociology as a weapon against social oppression and injustice.

Professor Robbins has long been one of the leading exponents of Bourdieu's theories in the fields of sociology and education. He is the author of The Work of Pierre Bourdieu (1991), Bourdieu and Culture (2000) and a recently published collection of essays, On Bourdieu, Education and Sociology; the editor of a four-volume collection of articles on Bourdieu (2000); and the author of many articles on Bourdieu's work.

Currently working on a new book on the internationalization of French social theory, Professor Robbins is also Director of UEL’s Group for the Study of International Social Science.
