Through his writings, Professor Poynter has attempted to engage with conventional currents of social theory and state and business policy, suggesting that alternative trajectories for human development may arise from a critical engagement with contemporary socio-economic thought. His publications have focused upon the analysis of the relationships between work, society and technological change with a particular emphasis on the role of the service sector in contemporary society. His recent research and publications have centred upon urban regeneration and economic development, particularly focusing upon East London and the research projects and publications of the London East Research Institute. He is currently co-editor, with Dr Iain Macrury, of a book on ‘Olympic Cities’ to be published in 2007 and is also in the process of writing a book on the role of the state and the changing relationship between the public and private sector in advanced post-industrial economies.
Before joining the University of East London, then North East London Polytechnic, in 1988, Gavin worked for the Trades Union Congress (TUC), specialising in the provision of trade union education and publications on employment and economic policy.
Previous teaching posts include the Open University, the Adult Education Departments of the Universities of Oxford and Kent, and the Workers Education Association.
Since 1995, he has been an Associate Research Fellow at the Centre for Comparative Labour Studies, Department of Sociology, University of Warwick. At the European level, he has been an Expert Adviser to the Association for European Training of Workers on the Impact of New Technologies (AfETT) producing several reports and providing key note contributions to a number of conferences held throughout Europe in the period 1994-2000.
