Spanish Language and Culture 1.2

Main aim(s) of the module:

The module is intended for students who have limited previous knowledge of the Spanish language and/or who have completed Spanish Language and Culture 1.1 or equivalent. It will further students’ knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. The module will broadly achieve an outcome at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The module aims:

To provide students with the elementary grammatical structures and vocabulary of the language and elementary skills in all four key language skills: writing, speaking, listening and reading at level A2.

To increase knowledge of the culture, customs and society of Spain to help students to further their awareness of the cultural and social background of the language.

Main topics of study:

  • Language topics will revise aspects of personal information and also include talking about future plans, the weather, going shopping and likes and dislikes, etc.
  • Elementary grammar and vocabulary will be introduced at level A2.
  • Continuing introduction to Spanish culture and society.

Teaching/ learning methods/strategies used to enable the achievement of learning outcomes:

Core teaching takes place through Spanish language and study skills workshops with an emphasis on student-to-student interaction and all student participation.

In addition, there will be guided reading and directed study to enable students to prepare for and reinforce class input and develop autonomous learning strategies. UEL Plus will also be used to complement contact sessions and workshops whereby additional information and resources can be made available electronically and on-line discussions between students and tutors can be held.

Assessment methods which enable students to demonstrate the learning outcomes for the module:

Weighting:

  • Writing task submitted as coursework. Possible topics include talking about yourself to a maximum of 500 words.

  • Grammar and vocabulary test at level A2. 45 minutes.

30%

  • Listening and speaking exam at level A2. 60 minutes.
