Ensure Computer Security

You need to protect information contained on your computer from others. Possible threats can come from external sources, but may equally be from people who study or work around you.

Why so much fuss about security?

Apart from all the valuable personal material you may be storing on your computer (credit card details, date of birth, bank account details, passport number, address), you could also expose yourself to loss of your work / research, plagiarism or other threats. For this reason we recommend a series of simple and sensible precautions to help you minimise the risks.

5 ways to ensure your security

  1. Follow our Computer Use Policy
  2. Don’t let anyone else use your password – however well you know them or how much they plead
  3. Ensure you keep your computer’s security system up-to-date, you can do this by downloading the latest patches and updates and making use of UEL’s anti-virus software, which is free to all students and staff
  4. Let us know if you think someone may have accessed your computer without your authority or has obtained your password. Contact us immediately
  5. Use sensible precautions – especially if you are surfing obscure websites - and be very cautious about opening e-mails from people or organisations you don’t know.
