SEED @ LONDON EAST
Symposium on East European Dramaturgy, Adaptation & Translation
A Symposium of the International Federation for Theatre Research (Translation, Adaptation & Dramaturgy Working Group)
Stratford Circus, London, E15: 20th January, 2010 14:00 – 17:00
For those working in the area of theatre translation, adaptation, and dramaturgy, it is all too easy to get locked into Western approaches to these inextricably linked processes. Both theory and practice in this area are often accompanied by a set of assumptions: that models operating in UK and US theatre practice are replicated throughout the world.
This symposium begins to reset the compass from London as we gaze East towards the rest of Europe to ask:
· What methodologies do translators and adapters from Eastern and Central Europe use in their theatre practice?
· What can we learn from such practices?
· What translation and adaptation strategies can be identified in the profiles of theatres in Central and Eastern Europe?
· What is the role and status of the dramaturge in Central and Eastern European nations?
Speakers include:
Noah Birksted-Breen: Artistic Director Sputnik Theatre Company
Duska Radosavljevic: Dramaturge and academic, University of Kent
Nicoleta Cinpoeş – writer and academic, University of Worcester
Anna Karabinska- Bulgarian translator and playwright
Diana Cesar – Director fEast (Festival of East and Central European Arts)
Chair: Professor Carole-Anne Upton, University of Ulster
The symposium will be organised in partnership with Para-Active – a Grotowski-influenced theatre company based in East London - the University of East London, and the IFTR.
Registration for this event is FREE but booking is essential.
