3. Do you offer any other kind of financial support except the scholarships on your webpages?

No, but you can seek local sponsorship in your home country or apply for one of the British Council’s scholarships. For further information visit the British Council at www.britishcouncil.org or visit your local British Council office.

4. How much is the deposit and is it refundable?

Once you have an offer, you will need to pay 50% of your first year fees and complete a Student Reply Form in order to be issued a visa letter. Your 50% deposit will only be refunded if you are refused a visa to enter the UK or if you fail to meet any academic or other conditions specified on your offer letter. Any monies paid to us will be returned to the original payer on receipt of documentary evidence to support your claim in accordance with our refund policy. Refunds are dealt with by our Finance deptartment.

5. How can I pay my deposit / fees?

There are various methods to help you pay your deposit and fees. For information, visit our tuition fee pages. Once you have paid the necessary 60% on enrolment, you can choose to pay the remainder in four consecutive monthly instalments. This option will only be available up to the enrolment deadline date.

6. What documents do I need to apply for a visa?

There a number of documents you will need to provide when applying for your visa to show that you qualify for entry to the UK as a student. For further information, and to confirm what documents you will require, we recommend you visit the UK Home Office’s website at www.ukvisas.gov.uk or contact your local British Embassy or High Commission.

7. How will the University help me with my visa?

The University will send you a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) which you will need to use to support your visa application. This official letter will state that you have been offered a place at UEL. This letter is emailed to you after you have met all the conditions of your offer and paid half of your fees.

10. Where will I live?

The University has on-campus accommodation available at our Docklands campus. For further information, visit our Residential Services pages. These pages also offer information and advice on finding private accommodation in the local area. You can also choose to live with family or friends. For further information about the location of our campuses, visit our Travel Wise section.

11. What are the English language requirements?

The English Language entry requirement for undergraduate (Bachelors) programmes is a minimum IELTS score of  5.5 / 6 depending on the programme and year/level of entry. We also accept other qualifications including TOEFL and PTE. The specific requirements for your chosen programme, including individual component scores, would be outlined as one of the academic conditions if you are made an offer.

The English Language entry requirement for the majority of postgraduate (Masters) programmes is IELTS 6.0 / 6.5. We also accept other qualifications including TOEFL and PTE. 12. Can I defer my entry?

If you have been made an offer, but have to defer for a good reason to the start of the next in-take, you will need to send an email to our International Admissions office at admintl@uel.ac.uk Please note that normally you can only defer your entry once and for no more than one academic year. If, after this, you would still like to join us, you may need to reapply.

13. Can I be considered for entry into Year 2 or 3 of an undergraduate programme?

If you already have qualifications or attended courses in the programme you wish to apply for, you may be eligible for advanced entry, that is direct entry into Year 2 or 3 of an undergraduate degree programme. If you think this may apply to you, indicate the year you wish to be considered for in the ‘Year of Entry’ section on the application form and then explain in more detail in the ‘Additional Information’ section why you think you may be suitable for an advanced entry placement. Please provide as much information as possible, including documentary evidence, module details and a grading quote.

14. I am studying at a UEL partner college and will receive my final degree from UEL but now want to be considered for entry Year 2 or 3 at UEL. How do I apply?

UEL has its own admissions procedures so you will still need to complete an application form. Please indicate the year you wish to be considered for in the ‘Year of Entry’ section on the application form and then explain in more detail in the ‘Additional Information’ section why you think you may be suitable for an advanced entry placement. We will be able to verify your studies to date internally.

15. I would like to change my programme - what should I do?

If you have been made an offer for one of our programmes, but you have now decided you would prefer to be considered for a different programme, you need to contact the International Office at international@uel.ac.uk explaining why you would like to be considered for a new programme. Depending on your new programme choice, this may be possible. However, we may ask for additional information to support your application to the new programme.

17. Where can I view information for applicants from my country?

We now have a number of country-specific Welcome Pages which give tailored information for applicants from those countries. Just go to Overseas Visits and click on the Welcome Page link.


18. I am applying for a programme that requires a portfolio. Can you advise me what this should include?

  • Portfolios should include 15-20 images of work. The media may vary depending on which programme you are applying for.
  • Clearly photographed (best on white background).
  • Some indication of the process and development (such as sketches). Some indication of the influences / inspiration
  • If sending electronically work should be saved as .jpegs

The portfolio should include work that shows:

  • Diversity (a range of media: drawings, photos, painting, media)
  • Creativity (expressions of the artist)
  • Experimenting
  • Interest
  • Observation (e.g. life drawings, still life, landscapes)
  • The portfolio should only include your own work and any done in a group context should be credited as such

19. I'm not sure if I would be classed as a home or international fee paying student. Can you advise me?

Assessments are only made on application by our Admissions Team, but see the information published on the UKCISA website, which will give you some idea of the criteria
