Going Global

Going Global Bursary

The University of East London (UEL) Going Global bursary is an exciting scheme, enabling students to participate in short overseas study visits related to their studies.

Some students find it difficult to take up opportunities to travel overseas for a semester or for a year on an Exchange or Study Abroad placement.  The Going Global bursary is an excellent way to integrate overseas mobility into your programme of studies.

The scheme is open to UK students (home fee status). There is a competitive bidding process and successful applicants will be awarded part –funding for their proposed study visits.

Are you interested?

The Going Global bursary enables you to apply for part-funding to undertake short overseas travel periods as part of your course, similar to a field-trip or a short work placement.  A short overseas study visit may be an ideal way for you to integrate an international dimension to your degree.  Experience of studying/working in an international setting is an increasingly desired attribute that employers look for in applicants, and your CV can be enhanced when it includes an overseas academic element.

Going Global is intended for mobility periods of a few days to a couple of weeks, which tie in with your studies at UEL.  For example, if your studies on a particular module would benefit from a visit to a particular overseas institution, conference, venue, event, city or country and you can demonstrate learning outcomes relevant to your modules, then Going Global may be able to help you.

Note: Applications must be completed in full and must be with the Going Global team by the deadline Friday 3rdMay 2013 (UEL International, room WB2.12).  Applications received after this date cannot be considered.

The earliest date of travel for successful Going Global applications is 1st June 2013, unless otherwise agreed in advance by your School.   All travel must be completed by Sunday 15th September 2013.

Important information about UEL policies

Going Global projects will generally be considered as field-trips or as work placements, if the trip involves working in some way.  As with any field-trips or work placements, authorising staff and students who intend to travel must be fully aware of, and act in accordance with UEL policy:  www.uel.ac.uk/qa/manual/placement.htm and www.uel.ac.uk/hs/fieldworkpolicy.htm . Authorising staff in schools are expected to perform all due diligence regarding these policies, including risk assessments, insurance and informing students of their rights and responsibilities.

EU and international students cannot apply for individual bids as the aim of this bursary is to enable international mobility for UK students.  However, it may be possible for a small number of EU students to become part of a group bid, where the majority of the group are UK home students.

How do I apply?

You will need to download and fully complete an individual or group application form, depending on the type of application that you are making and submit it by the given deadline.  Applications which are not fully complete or received after the deadline cannot be considered.

Note: Applications must be completed in full and must be with the Going Global team by the deadline Friday 3rd May 2013 (UEL International, room WB2.12).  Applications received after this date cannot be considered.    ‌‎

What are the criteria for a successful application?

Applications must:

  • demonstrate the relevance of the project to your programme/modules and outline the expected learning outcomes
  • evidence primary research, including evidence of correspondence with the destination institution, etc
  • provide full costs for the trip
  • provide a preliminary schedule of activities
  • include a thorough risk assessment (signed by all students intending to travel)
  • be supported by your School
  • completed fully and submitted by the given deadline. Partially completed application will not be considered.

You should ensure that you read all the information on this website and in the Help Text Going Global Application  to help you complete a successful application

How do I complete a risk assessment?

A thorough risk assessment is an essential requirement for a successful application. Our help-text has detailed advice on completing a Risk Assessment.

How much funding should I bid for?

The bursary has limited funds so you will be bidding for part funding as we want to support as many home students as possible to take part in international mobility.  It is therefore important to ensure that you can fund the remainder of your trip before making an application to the Going Global bursary.  Generally, if successful, you may be awarded up to a maximum of:

  • £150 - visits to close-by European countries
  • £250 - visits to European countries further afield
  • £350 – African countries
  • £400 - £500 – Americas
  • £600 – rest of the world

NOTE: You can claim up to the same value as your Going Global funding from your own Progress Bursary, if available. Ensure you inform the Finance & Registry helpdesk of how much of you are considering using to help further finance the trip. Contact finance.registry@uel.ac.uk

Where can I go?

You can travel to any country outside of the UK, provided that your proposed destination is not against advice given by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; your proposal is compatible with your course and modules; and your Programme Leader agrees.  Please note that you may need to obtain a visa to travel to some countries so it is important that you check with the relevant embassy and incorporate this cost into your proposal plan.

Can I go to a country where I have limited knowledge of the language?

This is possible but you will need to demonstrate in your application how you will get by and how you plan to have an academically robust learning experience despite not knowing the language.

How long can I go for?

The bursary is aimed at short visits normally from a few days up to a couple of weeks.

When can I go?

The earliest date of travel for successful Going Global applications is 1st June 2013, unless otherwise agreed in advance by your School.   All travel must be completed by Sunday 15th September 2013.

What if i have visited the proposed destination before?

The panel will want to determine whether you would gain a genuine international educational experience from your trip abroad.  If you have been on vacation to a particular destination before, then this should not be a problem – you will need to demonstrate the academic value of visiting that country, and how your proposal presents a new experience.

If you have family ties to the destination that you are intending to visit and regularly travel there, it would be more difficult to demonstrate that you would be gaining a new experience.  While this would not necessarily rule out this option, you will need to demonstrate clearly that the learning outcomes of this trip would be different from any previous experience in that country and that your proposal has academic integrity.

What are the deadlines?

Applications must be completed in full and must be with the Going Global team by the deadline Friday 3rd May 2013 (UEL International, room WB2.12).  Applications received after this date cannot be considered.

When should I start my application?

Your application will be stronger if you research thoroughly about where you want to go and how that fits in with your academic studies so you should start planning now.  You also need to allow sufficient time to complete a risk assessment and ensure that the application is supported and signed by your School.

Who do I speak to for advice on my options?

If you are keen to take part in this scheme but are having difficulty thinking of a potential proposal, your Programme Leader or School International Champion can advise you on whether the scope and scale of your project can be considered.   They can advise you about partner institutions you might visit which have links with UEL, modules which may be particularly appropriate for an overseas study visit or of particular events and venues that may fit well with your plans.  They can also advise on what constitutes academic robustness in relation to your programme for the project.

Your School International Champion is listed below.

Important Information on UEL Policies

Going Global projects will be generally considered as field-trips or as work placements (if the trip involves working at an enterprise). As per any field-trips or work placements, authorising staff and students must be fully aware of, and act in accordance with UEL policy - see www.uel.ac.uk/qa/manual/placement.htm and www.uel.ac.uk/hs/fieldworkpolicy.htm . Authorising staff in schools are expected to perform all due diligence regarding these policies, including risk assessments, insurance, informing participants of rights and responsibilities, etc.

Example Cases for Bids

These are fictional bids, but will give you a good idea of what kinds of projects you can bid for:

Dev Kimble is a BA English Literature student taking the module ‘Postmodern Fiction’ in semester B. Dev is aware of a conference in New York City in April where leading creative writers and postmodern thinkers will hold seminars on the links between a postmodern aesthetic and current trends in literature. After discussing this in-depth with his Programme Leader, Dev has submitted a bid to the Going Global bursary as an individual applicant, as he hopes to approach his coursework for this module with primary research obtained at the conference.

Zara Karukh and her student colleagues Jimmy Kano, Andrew Rangerfold , Monk Johnson, and Danielle Evans are all students on Bachelor programmes in the Business School. They are aware that they will all be studying the module ‘Attraction Management’ in semester B, and want to make a Going Global bid to conduct studies to use in groupwork. They have decided to bid for a visit to a large theme-park outside of Paris - the largest in Europe. They have contacted management at the theme-park already, and will be meeting several key members of the theme-park team to interview them and research the key features on managing a large scale attraction. Their work will then be used towards their assignments for the module.

Allanah Hunter and Chas Tripper are Masters students in International Law, and have decided to make a Going Global bid to visit the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands to see how proceedings operate, and to interview key staff. They have discussed this with their Programme Leader, who agrees that it is an excellent way of doing research for their dissertation and for an overview connected to all taught modules on their programme.

Bernie St.Moritz is a student on the Masters programme NGO and Development Management. Bernie wants to visit an NGO in Brazil for one week to work on a project to aid sanitization in an area of extreme poverty. Bernie has discussed the proposal with her Programme Leader, and has submitted an excellent bid that links directly in to her taught modules, and will provide material and data for use in her dissertation.

Karen James and Kashton Armani are student colleagues from Sports Coaching have been put in contact via existing links in the Health & Bioscience school with coaching staff from a professional football team in Italy. Karen and colleagues have put in an application to visit a training camp in Italy, where they will observe and research coaching techniques, and will use their experience towards their UEL studies.
