 International Welcome Social Events

UEL International work closely with UEL Student Union to organise lots of events and activities to help you get to know London and your fellow students, and help you settle in.

Monday 28th January: UEL International Film Night

Relax and make new friends while watching Hollywood blockbuster AVATAR. Popcorn provided!

“AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.”

Time: 7pm. Film will start promptly at 7.30pm

Location: Main Lecture Theatre, Docklands Campus (in the same building as the library)

Tuesday 29th January: Try a Sport for free

From 1pm, our UEL Sports staff will take you through their fun UEL drop-in sports programme, which includes Badminton & Basketball. Don't forget to bring a pair of trainers!

Tuesday 29th January: Speed Friending Event

UEL students at Speed Friending event run by UELSU

UELSU hosts ‘getting to know you’ games in the Students Union Lounge. Come and get to know other new students at UEL at this fun and inclusive free event. See Student Union website.

Time: 3pm – 4.30pm

Wednesday 30th January: Coffee, Games and Music in the Lounge

Free coffee and table-football, carpet boules, board games, and other activities in this chillout space – a great chance to meet other students and have some fun. See Student Union website.

Wednesday 30th January: UEL Sports matches

Support UEL teams competing against other universities in the British Universities & Colleges Sport fixtures. A good way to check out the Sports teams and see what teams you could join!

Wednesday 30th January: Sushi making class at ISH

Learn how to make Sushi with students from other London universities at International Students House (ISH).
This event is free but must be booked in advance at ISH with £5 deposit.  You will need to travel to ISH in advance to purchase your ticket. We recommend allowing c. 45 minutes- 1 hour to travel from campus to ISH.

Thursday 31st January: Karaoke Night

Free Karaoke sing-along in the Underground Bar– cheap drinks and entertainment in the University’s own student bar. See Student Union website.

Friday 1st February: UEL’s own Africa Cup of Nations tournament 5pm – 8pm

To celebrate the Africa Cup of Nations UEL will be running it's very own Africa Cup of Nations tournament! Not from Africa? No problem! Represent your own or any African country of your choosing in this 5-a-side football tournament.

Register in person at the SportsDock reception, or by emailing slo@uel.ac.uk - stating which country you would like to play for.

Friday 1st February: Residents DJs at ISH

Join other UEL students in a trip to International Students’ House bar in central London – with resident DJs and promotional offers. A chance to socialise with other students in a great location! Meet at UELSU, North Building, Docklands at 8pm

Saturday 2nd February: Half Day Tour of London

½ day Guided Tour of London with option of afternoon in historic Greenwich

Leaving Docklands Campus at 9am we will head into London with expert Blue Badge Guides. This is a great opportunity to see London with well informed commentary about the life and history of our great capital city. You will also have a chance to stop and explore certain venues on foot with your guide, before heading to historic Greenwich.

For those who want to leave us at this point you can return to campus, but we are sure most of you will want to stay and explore Greenwich with its famous market, Maritime Museum, park and Observatory. We will leave Greenwich to return to campus at 4.30 pm

Meeting point:  Meet at security desk near car park, Docklands Campus

Cost: This is a free trip to all new international UEL students (terms and conditions apply)

All those who have signed up for this tour will have been emailed ticket details on 30/1/13. Don't forget to bring your ID card on the day!

The Carnivals of Brazil come to East London! This colourful party is open to all UEL students and staff and will be FREE ENTRY. 

  • Freebees and fancy dress accessories!
  • Brazilian chilled beers on offer! 
  • Prizes for the best Carnival costumes!
  • Look out for celebration dancing tunes and a full live Samba Band

UEL International trips

The International Office  have organsied a number of trips throughout the year. Joining these trips will give you the opportunity to visit popular historic cities, seaside resorts and areas of outstanding natural beauty in England. These are subsidised trips for international, study abroad and exchange students.

Interested in becoming a Student Ambassador ?

There are 2 schemes running at UEL:

The International Office employs student ambassadors from both these schemes for its twice yearly Welcome Programme Events, although places are limited. UELSU welcomes volunteers to work as student ambassadors for its Freshers' Week Activities and to help organise Activities and Societies. This is a great way to gain experience if you are looking to join one of the 2 student ambassador schemes.

Volunteer

Volunteering has many benefits such as enhancing your CV, improving your job prospects and skills, making new friends and networking as well as giving something back to the community.
