Your Universe is the UEL student online magazine packed with everything you need to know! Published every two weeks, Your Universe is full of student news, events, offers and announcements – it really is one of the best ways to keep up with everything going on at UEL.

UEL Student Union Activities and Societies - Thanks to the Students' Union there is always a lot going on at UEL. Get involved in on-campus events, or join an activity or society. Trips and how to book

The International Office and Students' Union work together to organise regular trips.

Some Welcome Programme events are free, whilst the majority are currently heavily subsidised by UEL.

Fees for 2011/12 will be £7 only (NB - The actual 'at cost' price based on a full coach is on average £26 or more per person per trip based on a full coach, so you should expect to pay around £35 for a similar trip with a private travel company ).

Please note, places are restricted as we usually only run 2 coaches per event. (Terms and conditions apply - please ask us for a copy).

Tickets must be purchased in advance through the Students' Union either at Docklands (ground floor, North Building) or Stratford (University House).

 


Scheduled Trips 2011/12

You have the chance to join us on an exciting schedule of day trips and activities. All trips are £7 each, unless stated otherwise and include transport and Blue Badge Tour Guide.

Note: All coaches leave from Docklands Campus, East Building near the security desk (car park side). Tickets must be purchased in advance (see how to book)

Be there no later than 8.45am for a 9.00am sharp departure. Coaches will depart from the venue at around 16.30. Arrival time on campus will vary according to destination and traffic. If you would like more information email us

Semester B

For this semester there will be 4 trips. 2 were scheduled as below and 2 chosen by students in our online poll.

  • Cambridge - 4th February 2012
    Tour Description: Quite possibly the most beautiful city in all of England – if not all of Europe! (And the most romantic.) Nowhere else will you see such magnificent medieval architecture. The “backs”, the River Cam, and the picturesque colleges have inspired students for centuries, including Charles Darwin, John Milton and Prince Charles! Punt on the River Cam and gaze up at the heavenly ceiling of Kings College Chapel. Cambridge dazzles and amazes, its beauty leaving an indelible impression.Additional fees per person (optional): King’s College Chapel approx £6.00per person.
  • Portsmouth Naval Dockyards & Gunwharf Quays - 3rd March 2012. Includes: Naval Dockyards All inclusive tickets - This trip came in second in our online poll with 24.02% of the vote (43 votes). Additional fees per person (optional): Spinnaker Tower approx £7.15 per person. Tour Description: Immerse yourself in English maritime history at the Historic Dockyards of Portsmouth Harbour. This exciting day out includes a wander around the HMS Victory, the famous flagship of Naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson. Imagine life on this ship that in its heyday would have housed 800 men who lived, worked and fought above and below its decks. Britain’s history is all about seafaring and the National Museum of the Royal Navy gives you insight into this pivotal aspect of English life. You will also have the chance to see the Mary Rose Museum, dedicated to Henry VIII’s “flower of all ships” and the development of the navy during his reign. Finally, enjoy views of Portsmouth Harbour on a harbour boat tour.
  • Edinburgh 2nd - 4th April. ** Please note UEL Students' Union have cancelled this trip **
  • Windsor Castle and Eton - 21st April 2012Includes: Windsor Castle entry - This trip came in first in our online poll with 27.93% (50 votes). Tour description: Join us for this royally perfect day out, starting at the Queen's castle on the outskirts of London, where she entertains heads of state and relaxes with the Duke of Edinburgh and her corgis! Be dazzled by the dining rooms, the state apartments, and the artworks that decorate the palace Queen Elizabeth calls home. We also visit St George’s Chapel, an architectural jewel for the most chivalrous Order of the Garter, and visit the grave of the Henry VIII and his beloved wife Jane Seymour. We then take a walk down to Eton College, and learn the secret language and traditions of schoolboys that include Prince Harry and Prince William.
  • Brighton - 2nd June 2012. Booking Period 21st May to 25th May. Additional fees per person (optional): Royal Pavillion approx £8.20 per person.Tour description: Visit Britain's first seaside resort - Brighton! A playground for England's elite in the 18th century and party goers of today. You will visit the Prince Regent's opulent Royal Pavilion with its minarets and Chinese dragons. After our visit to the Palace, enjoy the funfair Festival Pier, explore the Promenade and Brighton's narrow twisting lanes, or treat yourself to real seaside fish and chips.

Hever Castle gardens?

Hever Castle

We headed into Kent, known as the Garden of England because of it numerous orchards and vineyards to visit the beautiful Hever Castle set in 125 acres of gardens.

The Castle dates back to 1270 and is famous as being the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the intriguing second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I. At 2pm Henry VIII arrived to lord over the Jousting Tournament where knights fight for the prize of the Kings favour. A great summer day out!

Flagfen and Cambridge

For the final trip of the semester international students visited Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre near Peterborough. This archaelogical site was fascinating. We discovered what life was like some 3500 years ago as we walked around the reconstructed Bronze Age village and the old ritual causeway

From here we drove to Cambridge. Everyone enjoyed punting on the River Cam before wandering around this historic town


A titanic moment in Brighton

'Beside the Seaside' in Brighton

For decades Londoners have spent a a fun day at the seaside in Brighton and we followed in that tradition!

Among Brighton's major attractions is the Royal Pavillion (entrance fee applies), the spectacular seaside palace which looks like it's been transported from India!

Other sights include the famous 'lanes' which offer great shopping, boutiques and quaint cafes. No visit to Brighton is complete without a walk along the promenade, a fish 'n' chip supper and a visit to the famous Brighton Pier.

Our group of adventurers left early for the Royal town of Windsor. Students enjoyed looking around the massive castle and the historic town. Some of us walked down to Eton with its College dating back to 1440. We were blessed by gorgeous sunshine despite the grey, dull start to the day.

Having fun in Bath

Mysterious Stonehenge and Bath

In the heart of the Wiltshire countryside lies the ancient and mysterious site of Stonehenge. This amazing structure is thought to date from 3100BC and was thought to have taken over 30 million hours of labour to complete. We walked around the site taking in the views from the various angles to get an idea of the history of the place. Next stop, the old historic Roman town of Bath. Home to Britain’s only hot springs the town was founded and favoured by the Romans and subsequent inhabitants for the soothing and healing powers of the spa.

Relaxing between the rides

Thorpe Park

We spent an exciting day at Thorpe Park, a theme park offering a number of extreme rides and roller coasters for the adrenalin junkies! There are 25 rides including 5 roller-coasters and 3 water rides! The bus was packed on the way back with all the soft toys won!

Jumping for joy at Dover Castle!

Historic Canterbury and Dover Castle

We headed south to the famous the White Cliffs of Dover to visit the 12th century Dover Castle. We toured the Secret Wartime Tunnels to see what went on during there during the Battle of Britain and afterwards explored the Castle. Next stop was the historic town of Canterbury, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and an important market town famous for the setting of Chaucer’s famous Canterbury Tales.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year

Having been collected from the airport the day before, our new students' first taste of London was of Chinatown and its vibrant and colourful Chinese New Year celebrations. Everyone enjoyed the massive Trafalgar Square event which included traditional Chinese dragon and lion dances and a line up of visiting Chinese performers from China.

Southend-on-sea and Bluewater Retail Park

We made our way to the popular seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea. Long the favourite weekend getaway for East Londoners, the town boasts the longest pier in the world (at 2km) which stretches out into the Thames estuary. Southend is also famous for the Golden Mile of amusement arcades, bowling alley and Adventure Island Fun Park www.adventureisland.co.uk The afternoon was spent at Bluewater Retail Park, which is one of Europe's largest.

Stratford-Upon-Avon and Warwick Castle

This trip was one for the history and culture buffs! First stop was to look around the ornate and very traditional thatched cottage that was home to Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare's wife. Next, we strolled the ancient streets of Stratford-upon-Avon before heading to our final place of interest, Warwick Castle.

Oxford

We all loved Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, home to Oxford University, the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The city offers a mix of old and new and some of the historic buildings were used as locations in the Harry Potter films. For more information on Oxford, go to www.visitoxford.org

Aboard HMS Warrior

Portsmouth

150 International Students went on a coach trip to the city of Portsmouth, where they enjoyed free entry to the richly historic Royal Navy Dockyard. The Dockyard is a huge open museum dedicated to the British Royal Navy and is home to the 15th Century remains of the Mary Rose, and to HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship. Portsmouth is also home to the modern development of Gunwharf Quay, which houses excellent shopping and catering outlets, and is home to the impressive, sail-shaped Spinnaker Tower, to which our students also gained free entry. London Bus Tour & River Trip

To celebrate starting their new lives at UEL, we took 150 new International students on a half day guided bus tour around the sights of London and on an afternoon Thames river cruise. Guided by an expert Blue Badge Guide, we visited such famous attractions as Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, and St. Pauls Cathedral, before embarking on a boat trip from Greenwich to Westminster.


Cardiff / Caerdydd

After a rather long journey it was good to stretch our legs and everyone enjoyed this visit to the Welsh capital, its parliament the Senned, Cardiff Castle and the Cardiff Bay area.


Norfolk Seal Watching Trip and Norwich

Norfolk is famous for being flat and having wonderful wildlife, especially birds and seals. We were taken out in small boats where we saw seals swimming alongside us and others sun-bathing on the sandbanks. After we explored the historic town and lanes of Norwich. Interested in becoming a Student Ambassador ?

There are 2 schemes running at UEL:

SRM Student Ambassador Scheme and Education and Community Partnerships Student Ambassador Scheme

The International Office employs student ambassadors from both these schemes for its twice yearly Welcome Programme Events, although places are limited. UELSU welcomes volunteers to work as student ambassadors for its Freshers' Week Activities and to help organise Activities and Societies. This is a great way to gain experience if you are looking to join one of the 2 student ambassador schemes.

Volunteer

Volunteering has many benefits such as enhancing your CV, improving your job prospects and skills, making new friends and networking as well as giving something back to the community.
